Colonoscopy

Colonoscopy

Colonoscopy is a medical procedure using a flexible endoscope to examine the colon. The endoscope is inserted through the anus and advanced through the rectum and all segments of the colon to the cecum, allowing the doctor to observe the intestinal lining on a monitor, including tumors, ulcers, and polyps.

This examination helps diagnosing colorectal conditions such as polyps, inflammation, and cancer. It is indicated for individuals experiencing abdominal pain, rectal bleeding, unexplained weight loss or changes in bowel habits . It is also recommended for asymptomatic individuals who are 50 years or older and have never been screened, have those having family history of colorectal cancer, or having personal history of colorectal polyps, cancer, or inflammatory bowel disease.

If necessary, the doctor would perform biopsies, hemostasis, or polyp removal during the procedure. Colonoscopy is generally very safe, with only minor abdominal bloating or discomfort during the process. Regular screening is recommended to help maintain colorectal health.
